Anyone who has ever had to put on a dive suit knows the problem: the material is thicker than on any surf or swim wetsuit, the suit fits tightly, and by the time everything is in place, including boots, hood and gloves, you’re already ready for a break.

Then there’s the setting. The lake shore is covered in gravel, the boat is rocking, and on a dive holiday the sun beats down on the black neoprene. And not every dive suit works the same way: wetsuits, semi-dry suits and drysuits differ considerably – including when you put them on.

We at FlipSoc explain the differences, show you a sensible order at the dive site and on the boat, and share tips to avoid overheating before you even get into the water.

In short: The best way to put on a dive suit is sitting down, working from your feet upwards in small sections instead of yanking at the edges. Boots go on after the suit, hood and gloves last. In hot weather, only put the top half on shortly before the dive. Drysuits with latex or silicone seals need their own, especially careful technique.

What types of dive suits are there?

There are three basic types: the wetsuit, the semi-dry suit and the drysuit. They differ in how much water reaches your body, and that affects warmth, use and how you put them on.

Suit type

How it works

Typical use

Putting it on

Wetsuit

A little water gets in and is warmed by the body

Warm to temperate waters, often 3–7 mm

Tight, more strenuous the thicker it gets

Semi-dry suit

Tight seals and a gas-tight zip greatly reduce water exchange

Cooler waters, often 7 mm, e.g. lakes in Central Europe

Very tight, snug seals make it harder to slip through

Drysuit

No contact with water, warmth comes from the undersuit

Cold water, long dives

Looser cut, but delicate latex or silicone seals

At the same water temperature, dive suits are usually thicker than surf wetsuits. The reason: when diving you move less and therefore generate less heat, and at depth the neoprene is compressed by the water pressure and insulates less well. You’ll find more basics in our article on diving in a wetsuit.

Why is a dive suit so hard to put on?

A dive suit is hard to put on because the neoprene is thick and therefore less stretchy, the suit has to fit snugly to keep you warm, and the seals close especially tightly. The thicker the material, the more force each centimetre takes.

You can’t simply pull a 7 mm semi-dry suit over your calf like a thin swim wetsuit. The material bunches up, forms rolls and sticks, especially to damp or sweaty skin. On top of that, there are inner seals at the wrists and ankles that often add extra sealing on semi-dry suits and slow you down as you slip through.

If you then yank at the edges, you risk not only fingernail tears but also overstretched seams. Especially with expensive semi-dry suits, a gentle technique is worth it.

How do you put on a wetsuit or semi-dry suit properly?

The best way to put on a wetsuit or semi-dry suit is sitting down, starting with your feet and working the material upwards bit by bit. This saves energy and protects the seams and seals.

Prepare: Take off your watch, rings and jewellery, keep your fingernails short. Lay out a mat or towel to stand on.

Sit down: Sit on a bench, a box or the boat bench. Sitting down, you have both hands free and no balance problems.

Legs in: Push your foot through the seal, then work the neoprene over your calf and knee in small sections. Grip with your fingertips, not your nails.

Hips and crotch: Stand up, pull the suit up to your hips and position it properly in the crotch. Check the knee pads.

Arms: First one arm through the seal, push the material up, then the second.

Shoulders and creases: Work the shoulders upwards and smooth out creases on your back.

Zip: With a back zip, close it with the pull cord or with your buddy’s help. Close gas-tight zips slowly and without any fabric caught in them.

We explain the basic technique for all wetsuits in detail in our guide to putting on a wetsuit.

What’s different with a drysuit?

With a drysuit, you first put on the undersuit and then step through the entry into the looser-cut suit. The biggest challenge is the neck and wrist seals made of latex or silicone, which are delicate and need to be stretched very carefully.

Because drysuits are built in very different ways, the main rule here is: follow the manufacturer’s instructions and have someone show you how to put the suit on and take it off during your drysuit course. This practice is part of the training, because buoyancy control and venting air also differ significantly from a wetsuit.

For drysuits with latex or silicone seals, divers use special accessories from the manufacturers. Household neoprene care products such as oils are off-limits there, because they can damage latex.

When do you put on boots, hood and gloves?

Put your boots on after the suit, and your hood and gloves right at the end, shortly before you put on your gear or get into the water. That keeps your fingers free as long as possible for the zip, BCD and gear check.

Boots: Place the suit’s leg seal either over or under the boot. Over the boot, less water runs in while walking; under it, the boot sits more securely. Try out which is tighter with your combination.

Hood: Only right before the dive, because it heats your head up a lot. Tuck the edge of the hood under the collar of the suit.

Gloves: Last, after the buddy check. Pull the glove cuffs over the suit sleeves or the other way round, depending on the model.

Gear: BCD, weights and tank only once the suit is fully in place.

How do you avoid overheating on the shore?

You avoid overheating by putting the top half on only shortly before the dive, staying in the shade and putting on your hood and gloves last. A thick dive suit in the sun heats you up a lot in a short time.

Half on: Suit up to your hips, top half hanging down. Only close it completely at the briefing or buddy check.

Find shade: Change under trees, in the car with the door open or under a sunshade.

Cool down: Pour a bucket of water over the suit or briefly step into the water at the edge.

Drink beforehand: Drinking enough water before the dive helps prevent circulation problems.

Watch for warning signs: If you feel dizzy, nauseous or have a headache, open the suit, get into the shade and, if in doubt, postpone the dive.

Putting on a dive suit on the boat: what matters?

On the boat, space is tight, the deck is rocking and everything is wet. So if possible, put the suit on up to your hips while still in the harbour and sit down for every further step.

Pack your gear compactly so nothing goes overboard or gets in the way. It’s best to have your buddy close the zip instead of contorting yourself on a swaying deck. With several dives a day comes the second classic: the suit is wet and cold, and putting it back on is much tougher than the first time.

FlipSoc: glide through the seal instead of yanking

With thick wetsuits and semi-dry suits in particular, the wrists and ankles are the bottleneck. Classic helpers are plastic bags or thin socks over your foot and hand. They work, but quickly slip off or end up in the bin. We developed FlipSoc for exactly this moment: you pull the donning aid made of smooth ripstop nylon over your foot or hand, slip into the leg or sleeve, and the neoprene glides over the nylon and through the seal. Then you pull it out and repeat on the other side.

It works wet or dry and for all suit thicknesses, even on your second dive with a wet suit. Important for divers: FlipSoc is made for classic jersey-lined wetsuits, i.e. suits with a fabric inside. It doesn’t work with smoothskin or open-cell suits, whose inside is bare, rubbery neoprene that sticks to the skin, and only works to a limited extent with some special inner coatings or smooth inner seals. It is not intended for the latex or silicone seals of drysuits. We explain more about the materials in our article on smoothskin and jersey-lined neoprene.

Typical mistakes when putting on a dive suit

Standing on uneven ground: Lost balance, twisted suit, foot in the gravel.

Pulling with your nails: Small tears on calves and forearms are the result.

Fully suited up too early: Overheating before the dive even starts.

Creases in the crotch: They restrict movement and let water circulate.

Forcing the zip: Gas-tight zips are delicate and expensive.

Unsuitable lubricants: Washing-up liquid, household products and oils can damage neoprene, glue, seams and seals.

Frequently asked questions about putting on a dive suit

How long does it take to put on a dive suit?

With a bit of practice, putting on a wetsuit or semi-dry suit including boots takes a few minutes. Still, allow plenty of time at the dive site so you don’t have to rush. In hot weather, only put the top half on shortly before the dive.

Is a semi-dry suit harder to put on than a wetsuit?

Usually yes, because semi-dry suits are often thicker and also have tight seals at the wrists and ankles. These seals slow you down as you slip through. A seated position and a donning aid for feet and hands make getting in easier.

Do boots go over or under the dive suit?

Both are common and depend on the suit and boots. If the leg seal lies over the boot, less water runs in while walking. Try both options in training and choose the tighter one.

Can I use washing-up liquid or oil as a lubricant?

We advise against it. Washing-up liquid, oils and similar household products can damage neoprene, glue, seams and seals and shorten the life of your suit. Mechanical helpers such as a plastic bag or a donning aid made of smooth nylon are better.

Does FlipSoc work with every dive suit?

FlipSoc works with classic jersey-lined wetsuits, i.e. most wetsuits and many semi-dry suits. It isn’t suitable for smoothskin or open-cell suits, and only works to a limited extent with special inner coatings. It is not intended for the latex or silicone seals of drysuits.

Conclusion

Putting on a dive suit made of thick neoprene is always a bit of work – but not a feat of strength if you sit down, work from the bottom up and move the material in small sections. Boots follow the suit, hood and gloves come right at the end. And in hot weather, the top half stays open as long as possible.

If you wear a wetsuit or semi-dry suit regularly, good technique protects not only your back but also the seams and seals.

To slip through tight seals more easily, you’ll find FlipSoc – the donning aid for your wetsuit in our shop, with free shipping, 14 days of free returns and a 5-year warranty.

A dive suit is thicker and tighter than any surf wetsuit – so getting into it takes real effort.
