The neoprene is stiff and cold, your fingers get clumsier by the minute, and the wind whistles wherever nothing is covered yet.

Whether it’s winter surfing on the coast, cold water swimming in a lake or ice swimming with your club: the moment before you get in the water often decides how warm you start the session. If you’re already getting chilled while changing, you lose heat you’ll urgently need in the water.

We at FlipSoc show you how to get changed in the cold quickly, sheltered and in the right order – and what you should look out for for safety reasons.

In short: In winter, it’s best to put on your wetsuit warm and out of the wind: pre-warm the wetsuit, change in a changing poncho or the car, work quickly from the feet upwards. Suit first, then boots, hood and gloves last. Plan your timing so that you go into the water straight afterwards, and never alone.

Why is putting it on so much harder in the cold?

Putting it on is harder in the cold because neoprene gets stiffer at low temperatures and winter suits are thicker anyway. At the same time, cold fingers lose strength and dexterity – exactly what you need to push the material up.

There are three more factors:

Thickness: In winter, surfers and swimmers reach for 5/4 or 6/5/4 mm suits. More material means less stretch and more effort at the cuffs.

Moisture: If the suit is still damp from the last session or your skin is wet, the neoprene grips more strongly. We explain why in our article “Putting on a wetsuit wet or dry“.

Accessories: Hood, gloves and boots are added. Every item takes time and dexterity.

Time pressure: Every minute in your underwear in the wind chills you. That makes you rush – and rushing leads to tugging and tears.

How do you pre-warm your wetsuit?

You pre-warm your wetsuit by transporting it in a warm room or in the heated car instead of leaving it in the cold boot. A warm wetsuit is more supple, stretches more easily and feels much more pleasant on the skin.

Proven methods from practice:

Ride in the footwell: During the journey, put the suit in the footwell in front of the heater or on the passenger seat.

Warm water in the tub: Take a flask or an insulated container of lukewarm water with you. Just before putting the suit on, pour some of it into the booties or rinse your hands and feet with it. Important: lukewarm, not hot – water that’s too hot can stress neoprene, glue and seams and is unpleasant for the skin too.

Carry accessories on your body: You can keep gloves and hood warm during the journey in your jacket pocket or under your jumper.

Be careful with heating: don’t put the suit directly on radiators or fan heaters or in blazing sun behind the windscreen. Strong, direct heat isn’t good for neoprene – this also applies when drying, by the way.

Where is the best place to change in winter?

The best place to change in winter is out of the wind – in a changing poncho, behind the open car door or directly in the car if there’s enough room. In the cold, wind is your biggest enemy, because it chills the skin much faster than still air.

Changing poncho: the classic

A changing poncho is a roomy cover-up made of towelling or warming material with a hood, under which you can get changed. For winter there are versions with a windproof outer and fleece inside. You can put it on over your clothes, take everything off underneath and pull up the wetsuit without exposing skin to the wind.

Don’t forget something to stand on

Standing barefoot on snow, ice or frozen gravel chills you in seconds. Put down a changing mat, a thick doormat or a flat tub. A tub has a bonus: after the session you can stand in it without getting sand and mud everywhere.

Changing in the car

In an estate car or van, you can often change your lower body while sitting. Legs into the wetsuit, pull the suit up to the hips, and only then get out and do the upper body. That spares you the coldest phase in the wind.

In what order do you put on wetsuit, boots, hood and gloves?

Put on the suit completely first, then the boots, then the hood and finally the gloves. That way your fingers stay free as long as possible for everything that needs dexterity – zips, pull cords and cuffs.

Prepare: Lay everything out within reach in the right order, take off your watch and jewellery, put down something to stand on, put on the poncho.

Legs: Feet into the legs of the suit, push the material up in small sections from the ankles over the knees to the hips.

Upper body and arms: Pull the suit over your hips, insert your arms one after the other, adjust the shoulders. Check the crotch and knee pads.

Close the zip: With a back zip using the pull cord, with a front zip at the front. Close the Velcro at the neck neatly.

Boots: Put on the neoprene boots. The leg openings of the suit usually go over the boots so that water runs off on the outside instead of into the boot.

Hood: Put on the hood. If the suit doesn’t have an integrated hood, the hood’s bib usually goes under the suit’s neck seal. Check that it doesn’t press too hard on your neck.

Gloves: Gloves last. The sleeves of the suit usually go over the glove cuffs.

Quick check and go: Get into the water while you’re still warm.

For some combinations, manufacturers sometimes recommend a different overlap, for example with suits that have special cuffs. If in doubt, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your suit. You’ll find the detailed basic technique for legs, hips and arms in our guide to putting on a wetsuit – here we focus on what’s different in winter.

How do you get neoprene gloves and boots on more easily?

Neoprene gloves and boots go on more easily when they’re warm and dry and you guide them not by the edge, but with the flat of your hand on the material. Cold, wet gloves are the most common test of patience in winter.

Gloves: Before putting them on, briefly blow into them or keep them warm turned inside out. Use your second hand to push the first glove completely over your fingers first, then smooth out the cuff.

Boots: Put them on sitting down, position the heel properly first, then pull up the shaft. With zipped boots, open the zip completely.

After the first session: Between two rounds, put accessories in a warm box or under your jacket, not on the cold ground.

How FlipSoc helps you put your wetsuit on in winter

In winter the cuffs are the critical point: thick, stiff material, cold fingers, time pressure. Many people then reach for a plastic bag over their foot and hand – that helps, but it tends to tear with thick neoprene and is hard to handle with numb fingers.

FlipSoc is a reusable dressing aid made of ripstop nylon. You fold the loose ends inwards by about a third, pull it over your foot or hand and slip into the leg or sleeve. The neoprene glides over the smooth nylon through the cuff instead of sticking to your skin. Then you pull it out and repeat on the other side.

Especially with 5/4 or 6/5/4 mm suits, this saves effort and time, and the cuffs get tugged less. FlipSoc works wet or dry – so also when you have to get back into the damp suit for a second round. At about 100 g and a packed size of approx. 15 × 10.7 × 2.7 cm, it fits in any jacket pocket. Important: it’s designed for classic wetsuits with a jersey-lined interior, not for smoothskin or open-cell suits, where the inside is bare neoprene that sticks to the skin.

What should you look out for for safety reasons?

For safety reasons, you should never go into the water alone in winter, get used to the cold gradually and get out immediately at the first sign of feeling unwell. Cold water is a serious risk, even for experienced athletes.

Cold shock: When you immerse yourself in cold water, the body reacts with rapid, uncontrolled breathing. Enter the water slowly and wait until your breathing has calmed down.

Not alone: In the cold, a companion on land or in the water is a must, not an optional extra.

Visibility: A conspicuous swim cap or hood and a swim buoy help people see you in the water.

Check the conditions: Know the weather, wind, current and ice edge. In winter it gets dark earlier – plan accordingly.

Listen to your body: Shivering, numbness, confusion or clumsy movements are warning signs. Get out immediately and warm up.

Health: If you have cardiovascular problems or other pre-existing conditions, talk to your doctor before starting cold water swimming.

A wetsuit provides buoyancy and warmth, but replaces neither the ability to swim nor caution. If you want to start ice swimming, you’ll find further advice on gradual acclimatisation in our article on cold water training and ice swimming.

How do you get warm and dressed again quickly after the session?

After the session, you’ll get warm and dressed fastest if your dry clothes are already laid out in the right order and you get out of the wind immediately. In winter, a good plan for afterwards is just as important as the one for beforehand.

Poncho on: Throw on the poncho straight after getting out, take off gloves and hood.

Upper body first: Suit down to the hips, dry your upper body, put on a warm layer.

Legs: Strip the suit off inside out over your legs while standing in the tub or on the mat.

Hat on, warm drink: A hat and a warm, non-alcoholic drink help you warm up.

Move rather than take a hot shower: Light movement helps you warm up. Many experienced cold water swimmers are cautious about very hot showers straight after an ice bath – if in doubt, seek medical advice.

Especially for surfing in the cold season, we’ve also put together tips on equipment and spots in the article Winter Surfing.

Checklist: putting on a wetsuit in winter

Wetsuit and accessories transported warm

Flask of lukewarm water

Changing poncho with hood

Changing mat or tub to stand on

Boots, hood, gloves laid out in dressing order

Dressing aid for the cuffs

Dry, warm clothes and a hat for afterwards

Companion, buoy, conspicuous cap

Weather, wind and water temperature checked

Frequently asked questions about putting on a wetsuit in winter

Should I put on my wetsuit at home in winter?

That can make sense if the journey to the water is short and you can drive. But bear in mind that in a wetsuit in a warm car you’ll quickly sweat, and damp skin brakes when you sit down or readjust later. For longer journeys, a warm place to change at the spot is usually the better choice.

Do neoprene boots go over or under the suit?

As a rule, the leg openings of the suit go over the boots so that water runs off on the outside. Some manufacturers recommend a different solution for certain models. If in doubt, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

How warm can the water be for pre-warming the wetsuit?

Lukewarm is ideal, i.e. pleasantly warm to the hand. Very hot water can stress neoprene, glue and seams and is unpleasant for the skin. A container of lukewarm water is perfectly sufficient.

Can I use lubricant or oil in winter to make the wetsuit slide better?

We advise against it. Washing-up liquid, hair conditioner, oils or Vaseline can attack neoprene, seams and glue. Mechanical aids such as a dressing aid, a thin sock or a plastic bag are better.

How long can I take to change in winter?

As short a time as possible, because every minute without protection in the wind chills you. With accessories prepared, a poncho and a clear sequence, many people manage the change in a few minutes. Then go straight into the water instead of waiting on the shore in your suit.

Conclusion

Putting on your wetsuit in winter works with a plan: keep the suit warm, change out of the wind, work quickly from the bottom up and put on boots, hood and gloves last. If you’re prepared, you’ll get into the water warm and come out warm too.

Never forget safety: never alone, get used to the cold gradually and get out immediately at any warning signs.

So that your thick winter suit glides quickly over your feet and hands even with cold fingers, try <a
