At the same time, you want to be able to move without fighting your suit. Too thin means freezing, too thick means stiff – and hard to put on.

On labels and in shops you’ll come across figures like 3/2, 4/3 or 5/4. To beginners it sounds like a secret code, but there’s a simple logic behind it.

In this guide we explain the numbers, give you a table by water temperature for surfing, swimming and diving, and show why thicker wetsuits require more technique when putting them on.

In short: The right wetsuit thickness depends on the water temperature: at approx. 18–23 °C a shorty or 3/2 mm is enough, at approx. 15–18 °C a 3/2 full suit, at approx. 12–15 °C a 4/3, at approx. 9–12 °C a 5/4 with accessories. The first number stands for the torso, the second for arms and legs. Divers usually need thicker suits at the same temperature.

What do the numbers 3/2, 4/3 and 5/4 mean?

The numbers give the neoprene thickness in millimetres: the first number stands for the torso, the second for arms and legs. A 4/3 wetsuit therefore has 4 mm on the upper body and 3 mm on the limbs.

The reason for this split is logical. The torso houses the vital organs, so as much warmth as possible should stay there. Arms and legs, on the other hand, have to move a lot – when paddling, doing front crawl or finning. Thinner neoprene in these areas means more flexibility.

Some suits carry three numbers, such as 6/5/4. In that case: first number torso, second legs, third arms. Suits like these are built for very cold water and are mainly used for winter surfing or diving in cold waters.

Which wetsuit thickness suits which water temperature?

The colder the water, the thicker the wetsuit – the following table serves as a rule of thumb. These are guideline values, because manufacturers vary and everyone feels the cold differently.

Water temperature

Recommended thickness

Suit type

Accessories

above approx. 24 °C

usually no wetsuit

Lycra or UV shirt

–

approx. 18–23 °C

2 mm or 3/2 mm

Shorty, spring suit

–

approx. 15–18 °C

3/2 mm

Full suit

optional

approx. 12–15 °C

4/3 mm

Full suit

boots if needed

approx. 9–12 °C

5/4 or 5/3 mm

Full suit

Boots, gloves, hood

below approx. 9 °C

6/5/4 mm

Full suit, often with hood

Full accessories

Besides water temperature, other factors play a role: air temperature, wind, sun, your activity in the water and how long you stay in. If you get cold easily or plan long sessions, go for the next thicker option if in doubt.

Surfing, swimming, diving: why does the thickness differ by sport?

The right thickness depends not only on the water but also on how much you move and how deep you go. If you’re very active, you produce heat; if you float calmly in the water, you cool down faster.

Surfing

Surfers paddle a lot but also sit on the board for long periods waiting for waves. Add to that wind on wet skin. For most European spots in spring and autumn, a 4/3 is the typical all-rounder, and a 3/2 in summer. If you want to surf in winter, you’ll need a 5/4 or more plus accessories. You can read more about this in our article on winter surfing.

Swimming and triathlon

Swimming and triathlon wetsuits are optimised for freedom of movement and buoyancy. According to the German Triathlon Union (DTU), they may be no more than 5 mm thick in competition. Typical suits have thicker neoprene on the torso and legs for buoyancy and very thin, flexible material at the shoulders.

Because swimmers are constantly moving, less thickness than for surfing is often enough. For very cold water there are special accessories such as neoprene swim caps. You can find out what swimming in a wetsuit feels like and what to look out for in our guide to swimming in a wetsuit.

Diving

At the same temperature, divers usually need thicker suits than surfers. There are two reasons: when diving you move comparatively little, and the neoprene is compressed by the water pressure as the depth increases. A 5 mm suit therefore insulates less at depth than at the surface.

That’s why 5 mm and 7 mm diving suits are common, often combined with booties, gloves and a hood. In cold lakes, semi-dry or drysuits also come into play. You’ll find the basics in the article Diving in a wetsuit.

Which is better: too thick or too thin?

If in doubt, slightly too thick is the safer choice than too thin, as long as you can still move enough. If you’re cold, you lose strength and concentration, and hypothermia is a real safety risk.

Still, too thick has its drawbacks: the suit becomes stiffer, you tire more quickly when paddling or swimming front crawl, and it can get too warm in summer. That’s why many water sports enthusiasts own two suits – one for summer and one for the shoulder seasons.

Too thin: freezing, quick exhaustion, shorter sessions, in extreme cases hypothermia

Too thick: restricted movement, faster shoulder fatigue, overheating in warm weather

Just right: comfortably warm during rest phases, free to move when active

Whatever the thickness: a wetsuit provides warmth and buoyancy, but it doesn’t replace the ability to swim or caution. Get used to cold water gradually and get out if you feel unwell.

Why are thick wetsuits harder to put on?

Thick wetsuits are harder to put on because more material puts up more resistance to stretching and the cuffs become stiffer. A 5/4 suit simply doesn’t stretch as easily as a 3/2.

There are further effects too. Thick suits often have additional seals at the wrists and ankles, sometimes an integrated hood. In winter the neoprene is also cold and therefore stiffer, and your fingers are less nimble. All together, this turns putting it on into a real effort.

The problem is worst at the ankles and wrists: here the whole heel or hand has to pass through a tight, stiff opening. Tugging here risks tears in the cuffs – exactly where thick suits are particularly expensive to repair.

Tips for putting on thick wetsuits

Store the suit warm: Keep the wetsuit in the warm car or in a bag before the session, not out in the cold overnight.

Get in dry: Dry skin grips the least. Getting wet first makes getting in harder.

Allow more time: Thick suits need more small sections when pushing them up. Don’t rush.

Stick to the sequence: Suit first, then boots, hood and gloves last – otherwise you’ll lack the dexterity in your fingertips.

Use a gliding layer: On feet and hands, a smooth gliding layer stops the stiff cuff from sticking to your skin.

We describe the complete basic technique in our guide How to put on a wetsuit.

How FlipSoc helps with thick suits

The thicker the wetsuit, the more noticeable a dressing aid becomes. FlipSoc, made of smooth ripstop nylon, is pulled over your foot or hand so that the stiff cuff glides over the nylon instead of gripping your skin. This saves effort, protects the cuffs and is quicker – especially with cold fingers.

FlipSoc works for all suit thicknesses, from a thin shorty to a thick winter wetsuit, and for all sizes. At around 100 g and with a small packed size, it fits in any sports bag. The prerequisite is a classic suit with a jersey-lined interior, as worn by most surfers, swimmers, triathletes and divers. FlipSoc is not suitable for smoothskin suits from freediving, where the inside is bare, rubbery neoprene that sticks to the skin.

What role do accessories play?

In cold water, accessories such as neoprene boots, gloves and a hood are often just as important as the thickness of the suit itself. You lose a lot of heat through your head, hands and feet.

From around 12–15 °C neoprene boots are worthwhile, and from around 9–12 °C gloves and a hood as well. Accessories also come in different thicknesses. Make sure boots and gloves fit well without constricting, otherwise your feet and hands will get cold despite the neoprene.

When putting them on: boots before the hood, gloves last. With suits that have an integrated hood, put on and close the suit completely first, then put on the hood.

How do you test whether you’ve chosen the right thickness?

You can tell whether the thickness is right from two signals: you don’t get cold even when resting, and your shoulders don’t tire excessively when active. Both together point to a good choice.

Waiting in the line-up or breaks on shore: If you get cold after a few minutes of sitting still, the suit is too thin or you’re missing accessories.

Paddling or front crawl: If your shoulders burn unusually early, the suit may be too thick or too stiff at the shoulders.

After the session: If you’re shivering heavily or take a very long time to warm up, go thicker next time or stay in the water for a shorter time.

Feel free to note down the water temperature, suit and how you felt after each session. After a few weeks you’ll know exactly at which temperature to reach for the thicker wetsuit.

Frequently asked questions about wetsuit thickness

What wetsuit thickness do I need for a water temperature of 16 degrees?

At around 16 °C, a 3/2 mm full suit is suitable for most water sports enthusiasts. If you get cold easily, stay in the water for a long time or aren’t very active, you can opt for a 4/3. For diving, thicker suits usually make sense at this temperature.

Is a 4/3 wetsuit a good all-rounder?

For many surfers in Europe, a 4/3 is indeed the classic all-rounder for spring and autumn at approx. 12–15 °C. In high summer it can be too warm, and in winter it usually isn’t enough. If you only want to buy one suit, go by the water temperature at the spots you visit most often.

How thick can a triathlon wetsuit be?

According to the competition rules of the German Triathlon Union (DTU), a wetsuit may be no more than 5 mm thick in competition. Triathlon wetsuits are also built to be particularly flexible at the shoulders. The current competition rules and the race information of the respective event are always decisive.

Why do divers need thicker wetsuits than surfers?

Divers move less and therefore produce less heat. In addition, neoprene is compressed by the water pressure at depth and then insulates less well. That’s why 5 to 7 mm is common for diving suits.

Are thick wetsuits easier to put on when they’re wet?

As a rule, no. Dry skin and a dry, warm suit are easiest to put on. With thick wetsuits, what helps most is a smooth gliding layer on the feet and hands, because otherwise the stiff cuffs grip the skin there.

Conclusion

The right wetsuit thickness depends on the water temperature, your sport and how sensitive you are to the cold. The numbers on the label are simple: first number torso, second arms and legs. Surfers and swimmers can get by with less; divers usually need more at the same temperature.

The thicker the suit, the more good technique pays off when putting it on: store it warm, get in dry, work in small sections and put accessories on last.

For the tight, stiff cuffs of thick wetsuits there’s a simple solution: get FlipSoc, the dressing aid for every neoprene thickness.

3/2, 4/3 or 5/4?
